one way to maintain or boost your confidence is to make a list of everything you’re good at. this is best done when you’re feeling positive. if you don’t have specific work skills (‘experienced in using ms word’ or ‘great at putting together powerpoint presentations’, for example), attack this one from a different direction. are you super-organised: the one people turn to to arrange a group outing or a company party? that’s planning. are you eagle-eyed when it comes to spelling mistakes or misaligned text? that’s attention to detail. are you quick to learn new languages? that means you probably have a good ear, an interest in others and an innate desire to communicate. these are all positive things to be proud of, so put them on your list. keep adding to it as new things occur to you. where am i going? it’s always good to have something to look forward to, so do yourself a favour and create a plan for developing the skills you need. just the action of making it can be a confidence boost. some skills you can develop for yourself using free online training and tutorials. if you don’t have the right equipment or software or an employer who is able or willing to provide training, you can find your own: local colleges are often focal points for adult learning – much of it free – and should be able to guide you in the direction of any work-based courses available. libraries (if you have one) and jobcentres , too, are always keen to help people develop their abilities and should have a list of local training providers. what do you need to learn? apply some basic project management techniques: make a list of the broader things you’d like to be able to do (such as ‘find an office job’ or ‘make amendments to my website by myself’) and then examine each item to find out exactly what you need to do, or learn to do, to make it possible. if you aren’t sure at first, identify your barriers: what has stopped you from doing something you’ve wanted to do before? is it lack of skills, or lack of evidence of skills? is it lack of experience? you might want to learn a particular software program, improve your spoken english or spend some time working in the environment you’re aiming for. local pointers even if you learnt it skills casually or at school, you might want to demonstrate to future employers (or to yourself) that you’re good at ms word, excel or powerpoint. take a free certified it skills course such as the one offered by kettering learning centre (01536 413304). you don’t need a pc, you can do it at your own pace and there are evening and weekend sessions available if you can’t do daytimes. you’ll boost your confidence and get a useful certificate to add to your portfolio. if it’s experience you’re short of, offer yourself as a volunteer through voluntary impact in northampton (01604 637522), which puts people in touch with companies and organisations across the county needing support in all sorts of areas, including – crucially for most office jobs - admin. social media management is another skill called for locally. put your facebook and twitter experience to use and add it to your cv. just these minor practical steps will help, because knowing where you are and where you’re going is important when you feel you’re floundering. consider it a personal stock-take and use the same principles to examine any area of life you feel needs attention. stay chipper! quick confidence tricks for a sudden boost: day to day life is one thing, but there are some occasions – such as interviews, potentially difficult phone calls, pending arguments – that call for specific techniques to help you come across as confident when you don’t feel it. (practice these often enough and you might even find you’ve become the confident person you’re pretending to be – aka: ‘fake it till you make it.’) entering a room full of total strangers / speaking in public fix your eyes somewhere over and above someone somewhere in the room. no one’s going to know you’re not looking at anyone in particular. the same applies when you’re speaking to an audience. look at the bridge of a nose or skim the tops of people’s heads with your gaze. this way their eyes won’t distract you. if you need to move around because you’re feeling awkward, nod and smile in your planned direction of travel, then walk that way. everyone will assume you’re interacting with someone else, if they give it a thought at all. most people will be far more bothered by how they’re coming across themselves to pay much attention to what you’re doing. humbling but liberating! clothes interviews aren’t the time to find out that something creases, pinches, develops uncontrollable static or rides up over your knees. try out new clothes at home before you wear them in earnest. choose something you know you look good in. something old and familiar might be your best friend for events where you don’t want to be distracted by your wardrobe. making difficult phone calls / standing firm if you’re making a call to complain about something, stand up to make the call. this changes your breathing and makes your voice sound firmer. also, make the effort to smile when you speak. you might feel silly but it will make you sound completely in control and will help you get what you want from the call. if you’re afraid you’ll back down when confronted, make a quick written list of the points you want to cover. it’ll keep you on track and make it less likely you’ll be deflected. in similar vein: arguing it might be on the phone or it might be in person, but stay calm. just ask yourself: am i going to win this one? if you are and it matters, go for it. if you’re not, or it doesn’t… just walk away. wash your hands of it. why waste your precious time and energy on someone who can’t or won’t listen? saying no if saying no makes you anxious, ask yourself why. if it’s because you’re afraid to be seen as unhelpful, make a counter-offer that suits you both. (‘i can’t work late on tuesday but i can spare an hour tomorrow to show sarah how to do the report.’) buy yourself time to respond, if you need to, by telling the person you’ll get back to them by the end of the day with your answer. and finally: tomorrow is a new day. tomorrow is a new day. tomorrow is a new day. (repeat as needed.) please note that we’re recruitment consultants, not psychologists. we can suggest helpful techniques, but if you are suffering from low mood or persistent confidence issues please speak to your doctor and seek professional guidance. if you’ve enjoyed this and would like to see more in our regular series of work-related features, have a look at our blog: www.johnsonunderwood.co.uk/blog or follow us on facebook or twitter . emotional intelligence? what's that got to do with my interview? by louise cuzner • 04 apr, 2018 • normal 0 false false false en-us en-gb ar-sa ‘not everything that can be counted counts, and not everything that counts can be counted.’ – albert einstein (attributed) some things are hard to measure: the lengths of squirming babies, return on investment, the likelihood of business success if you were to call your start-up one thing and not another... and, big on the radar these days, emotional intelligence. emotional intelligence. ei (or eq, for emotional quotient). it’s a term often bandied around: one of the ‘soft skills’ employers and recruiters increasingly say they’re looking for in job ads. have you come across it in an advertisement and wondered what it meant? is it something you can, or should, develop? do you even know what it is? if not, you wouldn’t be alone. a quick poll around a local office (not ours, in case you’re wondering) yielded the following answers: ‘control, as in controlling one’s emotions?’; ‘relying on intuition or gut feeling to gauge a situation’; ‘the ability to interpret other people’s emotions well and accurately, and react accordingly’; ‘it’s, like, um – well, i know what ‘emotional’ means and i know what ‘intelligence’ means, but if someone said ‘emotional intelligence’ to me they’d confuse the daisies out of me’; ‘i react immediately negatively to that. i’m thinking, are they wondering if i’m even competent to hold down a job? am i easily influenced by emotions? do i make judgements based on emotions? might they think i’ll take things out on people? if they’re judging me, i’ll fail. i think a test would be too judgemental. i’m not pragmatic. i think if you relate to people well, you have to be empathetic, but that doesn’t mean you can’t do your job’; and, most succinctly: ‘never heard of it.’ a good cross-section there, then. and the official definition? take your pick. according to collins english dictionary, ei is a term that is: ‘used to refer to people’s interpersonal and communications skills.’ another, also from collins, is: ‘awareness of one’s own emotions and moods, and those of others, especially in managing people.’ then there’s this: ‘emotional intelligence can be defined as the ability to monitor one's own and other people's emotions, to discriminate between different emotions and label them appropriately, and to use emotional information to guide thinking and behaviour.’ ( coleman, andrew (2008). a dictionary of psychology (3 ed.). oxford university press. isbn 9780199534067.) karen hutchinson, an experienced hr professional/consultant who enjoys coaching managers to enhance their soft and hard skills, believes a particularly vital element of ei is having the capacity to be aware not just of how you control but also of how you express your emotions: something close to home for all who work alongside others (which is pretty much most of us, one way or another). ‘it’s not just what you say but the way you say it,’ she says. ‘it’s an important part of being able to handle interpersonal relationships - in a thoughtful and empathetic way - and important also for achieving both personal and professional success.’ it’s big business too, these days, as demonstrated by the plethora of online certification schemes, seminars, workshops, worksheets, courses and exams a quick web search will yield. but it’s somewhat nebulous, amorphous, isn’t it? hard to pin down. maybe even a bit threatening, with its psychometric connotations? after all, we’re all assured there are no right or wrong answers in psychometric testing - which can only, surely, be a snapshot of a person at any given moment? - but if you feel you’re in a position where being offered a job or not might depend on your answers it’s hard to view it neutrally, just as one of our interviewees above demonstrates. so let’s suppose you’re interested in a job whose recruiter is asking for emotional intelligence. maybe they’re asking for an appreciation of the value of ei, or maybe they’re asking for examples of situations where you’ve actually demonstrated it? why do they want it? and would you know where to start? rhett power, writing for success.com, cites research that demonstrates ‘a direct correlation between the emotional intelligence of a company’s employees and the company’s success’, stating that: employees with a high level of ei have self-awareness that helps them understand co-workers and meet deadlines ; when people have high ei, they are not bothered by client criticism; they remain focused on outcomes , rather than feeling offended; and if two job candidates have similar iqs, the one with the higher ei will likely be a better fit for the company. so now you know why they want it, how might you show them you have it? according to power, there are several attributes you could refer to to demonstrate your own ei: adaptability : not being afraid of change; self-awareness : knowing what you’re good at and what you need to learn; empathy : being able to relate to others and what they might be going through; not being a perfectionist : being prepared to try something, take a chance, maybe make mistakes and learn from them; being balanced : looking after yourself, recognising that there’s life beyond work and not burning the candle at both ends; curiosity : wanting to know how things work and not being afraid to ask questions; and optimism and graciousness : appreciating that every day has its good points and not being prepared to let critical types or toxic people affect that. in your cv or during an interview you could point to times when you’ve been thrown curveballs in a job, explaining how you dealt with them and how they helped you learn and grow. you could describe the atmosphere in which you’ve worked and how you’ve found ways to support your colleagues in their tasks or make a line manager’s life easier. you could talk about things you’ve found challenging and how you might approach similar tasks differently another time. and, if you’re in an interview, remember you can ask your interviewer as many questions as you like: the point of an interview is not solely for them to decide whether they want you as an employee but also for you to decide whether the company is right for you. it takes two to tango and you both have to be happy. so there you are. there’s no sorcery and no tripwire with ei: basically, it boils down to showing people you’re flexible, adaptable and open to growth. in other words, that you’re not an automaton. but you knew that anyway. you can read rhett power’s piece here: https://www.success.com/article/7-qualities-of-people-with-high-emotional-intelligence have you ever been asked directly about emotional intelligence at an interview?
